A chest strap is the single biggest upgrade you can make to your HRV data. We tested the Polar H10, the research gold standard, against the far cheaper COOSPO H808S. Both are good. Here is where they differ and which one to buy.

TLDRA chest strap reads your heartbeat electrically instead of optically, which is the difference between beat timing that is accurate to the millisecond and beat timing that is guessed. That matters enormously for HRV. The Polar H10 is the research-grade default and what we recommend if budget is not the deciding factor. The COOSPO H808S costs a fraction of it and, in our testing, produced readings we could not meaningfully separate from the Polar's. The Polar is a little more comfortable over long wear; the COOSPO beeps audibly when it connects and disconnects, which some people like and some find irritating. Either one will transform your data.

If you are tracking heart rate variability to guide a recovery, the device you measure with matters more than almost any other choice you will make about your routine. Not because a better sensor gives you a nicer number, but because HRV is built entirely out of the timing between heartbeats, and timing is the one thing optical sensors are worst at.

A chest strap fixes that. This is the case for using one, and a comparison of the two we actually recommend.

Why a strap changes everything

Your watch, your ring and your phone’s camera all measure your pulse the same way: they shine light into your skin and watch the reflection change as blood moves underneath. That technique, photoplethysmography, is very good at answering “what is your heart rate right now.” It is much shakier at answering “exactly how many milliseconds passed between that beat and the one before it.”

HRV is nothing but that second question, asked hundreds of times in a row.

A chest strap does not look at blood at all. Two electrode strips sit against your ribcage and pick up the electrical impulse that fires your heart, which is the same signal a clinical ECG records. The moment of the beat is unambiguous, so the interval between beats is measured rather than estimated.

Why the error compounds. Suppose an optical sensor is off by 15 milliseconds on where a beat happened. That is invisible in your heart rate: 60 bpm reads as 60 bpm. But RMSSD, the core HRV metric, is calculated from the differences between consecutive intervals, and a 15 ms wobble is the same size as the real signal you are trying to see. Small timing noise becomes large HRV noise.

This is why validation research keeps reaching for the same reference device, and why the gap between strap and wrist shows up so clearly in the numbers. The practical upshot: a strap is especially worth it if you do orthostatic stand tests, where beat timing during a position change is exactly what you are trying to capture, or if you are doing resonant breathing work, where you want to see coherence build in real time rather than read an average after the fact.

The Polar H10: the one researchers use

The Polar H10 is the default answer, and it has earned that position. When a study needs a consumer device to serve as ground truth against clinical equipment, this is usually the device. Agreement with ECG-derived intervals sits at roughly 0.99.

What you are paying for, beyond the sensor:

  • Internal memory. It can record a session on its own, without a phone connected, which is useful if you want to strap in and put the phone down.
  • Simultaneous connections. It holds Bluetooth and ANT+ at the same time, so it can feed the Autonomic app and a bike computer at once.
  • The band. This is the underrated part. The Polar Pro strap is wider, softer, and has a silicone grip pattern that keeps it from sliding down during movement. Over a long session, or overnight, you notice.
  • Longevity. The build quality is the reason people keep recommending H10s that are five years old.

It runs about $80 to $90. The band is the wearing part, and replacements are cheap and easy to find when it eventually stretches.

The COOSPO H808S: most of it, for a third of the price

We did not expect much from the COOSPO H808S. It costs around $30. It is a no-name-to-most-people brand. We tested it expecting to write a paragraph explaining why the extra money for the Polar was obviously worth it.

That is not what happened. Worn alongside the Polar H10, the H808S produced readings we could not meaningfully separate. Same beat-to-beat data over Bluetooth, same stability once the electrodes were wet, same lack of dropouts sitting still for a five-minute morning reading. For the specific job of taking a resting HRV reading each morning, it did the job.

Two things distinguish it in daily use:

  • It beeps. The H808S makes an audible tone when it powers on and pairs, and again when it disconnects. Whether this is a feature or an annoyance depends entirely on you. If you have ever finished a reading and realized the strap had silently dropped out two minutes in, you will appreciate it. If you are measuring at 6am next to a sleeping partner, you will not.
  • The band is more basic. It is thinner and less grippy than the Polar Pro strap. Sitting or lying still, this is a non-issue. Moving around, it is more likely to need a readjustment.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Polar H10 if you want the device the research uses, if you will wear it during exercise or for long stretches where comfort compounds, or if you want onboard recording. It is the safe, no-thinking-required choice.

Buy the COOSPO H808S if $30 versus $85 is the difference between owning a strap and not owning one. That is not a close call. A COOSPO on your chest every morning beats a Polar you did not buy, by an enormous margin, and it beats a watch reading by nearly as much.

The genuinely wrong answer is spending months agonizing over the choice while measuring with a wrist sensor. Both of these are good. Pick one.

Get the electrodes wet. This is the whole game. A dry strap gives noisy, jumpy data on any brand, and it is the single most common reason people conclude their strap is broken. Run both electrode strips under a tap before you put it on, position it directly under the chest muscle, and snug it so it does not slide.

Getting a clean reading once you have one

The strap removes the sensor as a source of error, which leaves your routine as the remaining one. HRV moves with posture, breathing, digestion, caffeine and time of day, and those swings are much bigger than any difference between these two devices.

The COOSPO H808S costs a third as much and, in our hands, gave up almost nothing that matters for daily resting readings. Get either, wet the electrodes, and measure the same way every morning.

Do I really need a chest strap to measure HRV?+

You do not need one to get started, but it is the single biggest accuracy upgrade available. Dry electrodes. The strap needs a conductive path to your skin, and a dry band gives it a noisy one. Wet both electrode strips under a tap, or use a little electrode gel, and position the strap directly below the chest muscle, snug but not tight. This fixes the overwhelming majority of erratic strap readings.
